Smith College Professor Loretta Ross will discuss how bringing empathy to our antiracism and social justice work can make it more effective. She is an activist and scholar. Garrett is the author of “The Right Kind of White” and founder of The Barnraisers Project, which has trained nearly 1000 participants to organize majority-White communities for racial and social justice. Irving, author of Waking Up White, and Finding Myself in the Story of Race, will help Friends learn how to engage in transformational conversations. Because dominant white culture encourages us to avoid conflict, many of us have not developed the insight, skill, and emotional stamina necessary to navigate differences. Washington Interfaith Network at FMW, Decatur Place Room, November 17, 12:15 pm
WIN director Alision Dunn-Amaguer will join FMW’s WIN Core team to share WIN’s work and to answer questions. WIN brings together over 50 faith-based organizations to advocate for affordable housing, DC transition to green energy, tenant rights, public safety and other issues of concern to DC’s low income residents and communities of color. FCNL's Quaker Public Policy Institute, Hilton Arlington, November 13-17
Due to the extreme violation of human rights, mounting civilian casualties and threat of regional war, FCNL has made an emergency shift in the theme of its annual policy institute and lobby day to focus on Israel/Palestine and the need for a US arms embargo. Friends Committee on National Legislation is the oldest faith-based lobby organization in the U.S., and highly respected as a force for building consensus. Learn more and register. Apartheid-Free Convening, Philadelphia, Saturday, December 7
Last Sunday at our monthly Meeting for Business, FMW officially joined the AFSC-led Apartheid Free Communities network, pledging to cut economic ties that permit the continuation of an apartheid system in Israel Palestine. If you would like to participate the FCNL Policy Institute/Lobby Day (Nov 13-17) or the Apartheid Free Communities Convening in Philadelphia (Dec 7) and need financial help, the Social Justice Fund is offering a limited number of subsidies of $100 to $200 to help cover costs of travel and registration.
