Friends Meeting of Washington Masking Policy (May 2023)

In the light of our work to be an anti-racist community and our goals to protect our most vulnerable members,

Recognizing that masking both provides valuable protection against the spread of COVID-19 and other airborne infectious diseases, and presents challenges to communication and community building,

Desiring for our decisions to be informed by science,

Acknowledging that the World Health Organization said on May 5th, 2023 that the pandemic’s downward trend over the last year now allows them to declare  COVID-19 an established and ongoing health issue which no longer constitutes a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC),

Further acknowledging that based on current COVID-19 trends, the Department of Health and Human Services allowed the federal Public Health Emergency (PHE) for COVID-19, to expire on May 11th, 2023,

Recognizing that the COVID-19 Community Level in the District of Columbia has been LOW since July 30, 2022,

Friends Meeting of Washington is updating our masking policy as follows:

When the COVID-19 Community Level in the District of Columbia is LOW:

  • FMW encourages the use of masks, especially while indoors.

When the COVID-19 Community Level in the District of Columbia is MEDIUM:

  • Masking is required in indoor spaces with 20 or more friends, and in smaller groups when any friend requests it.
  • Masking is encouraged in outdoor spaces.
  • Smaller groups may unanimously choose to be unmasked indoors.

When the COVID-19 Community Level in the District of Columbia is HIGH:

  • Masking is required for everyone over 5 years old.

FMW’s co-clerks will monitor COVID-19 community levels and inform Friends when masking requirements change.
